As the climate emergency intensifies, the importance of Earth Day grows with each year. First held in 1970 in the US, this annual celebration mobilizes millions worldwide to stand up for environmental protection, emphasizing the immediate steps necessary to safeguard our planet.
History
Inspired by a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US Senator and environmental advocate Gaylord Nelson envisioned a series of college teach-ins focused on the necessity of preserving clean air and water. He selected April 22 for its timing between Spring Break and final exams, and the term “Earth Day” was coined for this occasion. The inaugural Earth Day in 1970 saw an impressive turnout of 20 million Americans—about 10% of the population at that time—demonstrating in support of environmental protection. This significant public movement prompted President Richard Nixon to establish the Environmental Protection Agency and sign the Clean Air Act within the same year, in December 1970.
Impact & Legacy
Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has sparked a wave of worldwide action and learning about our environment. Here’s a snapshot of the achievements:
- Planted more than hundreds of millions of trees.
- Teachers from 149 different countries are teaching about how to take care of our Earth.
- Schools have received 7 billion dollars to help them be more eco-friendly.
- Everyone together has done 2.7 billion good things for the environment.
- 15 million people have helped pick up trash and clean our planet.
- Citizens have gathered 50 million pieces of information that help us understand more about Earth’s health.
Planet vs. Plastics
This year’s theme of Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics“. It emphasizes the critical need to address the overwhelming plastic waste that endangers ecosystems and human health worldwide. The goal is to ignite a significant shift away from plastic dependency by reducing plastic production by 60% by 2040. In previous years, Earth Day has tackled pressing issues such as climate action, conservation or clean energy.
United Commitment
Whether it’s joining a local cleanup, planting a tree, or pledging to use less plastic, your actions contribute to a global impact. Earth Day is every day, and it starts with us. Together, we can ensure the legacy of Earth Day is carried forward, not just on April 22nd but throughout the year.
